Did you know? Some Fun Facts About Owls…
1. An owl’s head can turn almost completely around! This allows it to see its prey without moving its whole body. Since owl eyes can’t move around the way our eyes do, moving their head this way allows them to quietly see prey.
2. Owls are nocturnal, or awake at night. They’re amazing hunters, even though they do their hunting in the dark.
3. They eat mice, voles, and other small animals. Owls digest what they need to and then cough up the rest in the form of an “owl pellet.” If you take apart an owl pellet, you can often find small animal bones.
4. Unfortunately, owls aren’t actually very intelligent in terms of problem-solving, so the term “wise old owl” is a misnomer. It’s probably based on their appearance. Their brains are actually on the smaller side.
5. There are 216 species of owl alive today. Some well-known types of owl include the Barn Owl, Screech Owl, Great-Horned Owl, Tawny Owl, and Snowy Owl.
